The
Vascular Birthmarks Foundation (VBF) is very excited to announce that
the 2007 Port Wine Stain and Vascular Birthmarks Conference will be
held on Friday, November 2nd and Saturday November 3rd. This conference
will take place at the Beckman Laser Institute in Irvine, California
and at The Island Hotel minutes away in Newport Beach.
Dr. J. Stuart Nelson, along with the Beckman Laser Institute will be
co-sponsors of this year’s conference. The theme is Research Holds
the Key.
This conference will be unlike any other conference because the first
100 families that register will receive lodging at a significantly discounted
rate for the first night. The first 50 families of those 100 families
will receive that same discounted rate for the second night also. The
meals that are included are the welcome reception on Friday night, and
breakfast and lunch on Saturday. Lodging will be at The Island Hotel
www.theislandhotel.com. In addition, the conference fee is only $50
per family and the clinic fee is only $50 per family. Anyone who cannot
pay the clinic or conference fee can request that the fees be waived.
A $25 deposit is required for each family registering for the conference
and this fee cannot be waived. This deposit is non-refundable.
On Friday night, the keynote address will focus on the latest research
findings. Dr. Nelson and Dr. Martin Mihm will speak regarding some exciting
news about the treatment of port wine stains. In addition, Dr. Milton
Waner and Dr. Lou Fink will be presenting on their research concerning
hemangiomas, which is also exciting news. Another first will be a presentation
on Saturday by Linda Rozell-Shannon (VBF President and Founder). She
will be presenting the results from her PhD study concerning how families
are impacted by hemangiomas. Breakout sessions on Friday evening will
be available to patients and their families. Drs. Nelson and Mihm will
facilitate the Port Wine Stain team, Dr. Waner will facilitate the Hemangioma
team, Dr. Alex Berenstein will facilitate the Vascular Malformations
team, and Dr. Kamiab Delfanian and Dr. Anne Comi will facilitate the
Syndrome team.
On Saturday, speakers and topics include:
- Dr. Nelson – Current trends in the diagnosis and treatment
of port wine stains
- Dr. Mihm – Histopathology of port wine stains
- Dr. Waner - Latest developments in the diagnosis and management
of hemangiomas
- Dr. Comi – New developments in Sturge-Weber Syndrome
- Dr. Delfanian – Managing Klippel-Trenaunay Syndrome
- Dr. Berenstein – Treating vascular malformations
- Linda Rozell-Shannon – Assessing the burden of hemangiomas
on the family system
There will be four teams for the clinic sessions on Saturday:

· Team B – Hemangiomas – Dr. Waner
· Team C – Sturge-Weber/Klippel-Trenaunay Syndromes –
Drs. Comi and Delfanian
· Team D – Vascular Malformations - Dr. Berenstein

will provide daycare services at no charge to the families)

Each family will be given 10-15 minute clinic appointment with a team
of birthmark specialists. Please bring films, medical reports and photos
to the appointment.)

Important Note: It is very important that you register as early as
possible. The first 100 families to register and to send a $25 registration
fee will be guaranteed lodging at a discounted rate for the first night
(one room) and meals (welcome reception on Friday, and breakfast and
lunch on Saturday). The first 50 families of those 100 will be guaranteed
lodging for the second night also at a discounted rate. The registration
form includes more detail. We will be collecting names of all families
that register beyond the initial registrants and will be attempting
to get additional funding to cover all meals/lodging. However, at this
time, there is only enough funding to pay for those families that register
early. The hotel will also offer an extended discounted rate for three
days prior to the conference and three days after. These dates include
October 30, 31, November 1, and November 4, 5, and 6.
Food is easily accessible at the hotel and at nearby restaurants for
all families who wish to attend, but who do not qualify for early registration
benefits. No one will be turned away from attending the conference and/or
clinic, but everyone who wishes to attend must register and pay a $25
registration fee. The early registrants will be notified by mail that
meals and lodging are included. When the early registrant spaces are
